Craniosacral Therapy

Why is Craniosacral Therapy so Important?

Craniosacral Therapy is a light-touch approach that can create dramatic improvements in your health. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction to improve whole-body health and performance.

Few body structures have more influence over your health and well-being than your central nervous system. And few body systems have more impact on your central nervous system than the craniosacral system – the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord.

Every day you endure stresses/strains and your body absorbs them. However, your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord. Unfortunately, this can compromise the function of the central nervous system – and the performance of nearly every other system in the body.

Craniosacral Therapy releases those tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct. Using a gentle touch – starting with about the weight of a nickel – practitioners evaluate your internal environment. Then they use distinctive light-touch techniques to release any restrictions they find.

By freeing the Central Nervous System to perform at its best, Craniosacral Therapy naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your health. Because it’s so gentle, Craniosacral Therapy can be effective for all ages, from newborns to elders.

What Craniosacral Massage Therapy (CSMT) does for Relieving Migraines

During a CSMT session, Julie at Posture Massage, a trained therapist, applies a gentle touch—no more than the weight of a nickel—to the bones of the skull, spine, and pelvis. The therapy is intended to:

  • Release tension in the fascia, the connective tissue that supports the craniosacral system.
  • Calm the central nervous system, helping to regulate the body's physiological responses.
  • Improve the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which some practitioners believe may be restricted in migraine sufferers.
  • Address musculoskeletal issues in the head, neck, and back that can act as migraine triggers.

How Craniosacral Massage Therapy works for Migraines

  • Gentle Manipulation: CSMT uses a very light touch to manipulate the dura mater (membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and the bones of the skull and spine.
  • Cerebrospinal Fluid: The goal is to improve the natural rhythm and flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which is vital for the healthy function of the brain and nervous system.
  • Fascia Release: The therapy targets the fascia, a connective tissue network in the body, to release restrictions and improve overall well-being.

Benefits for Migraine Relief

  • Reduced Pain: Most patients report a reduction in headache intensity and frequency.
  • Stress Reduction: CSMT can help alleviate stress-related issues that may contribute to migraines.
  • Improved Functioning: Patients may experience better daily functioning and overall well-being.
  • Holistic Approach: Julie at Posture Massage in Connecticut addresses physical, emotional, and energetic imbalances that can trigger migraines.

Julie at Posture Massage has helped many clients with migraine relief in her Stamford and Westport Connecticut office locations. She will ensure that you have explained your history with migraines, including whether you have recently suffered from severe head injuries, in which case she may recommend other massage therapies until the injuries have calmed down.

Craniosacral Massage Therapy for Vertigo Relief

Craniosacral therapy (CSMT) is a gentle, hands-on technique that can help relieve vertigo by releasing physical and emotional tension that contributes to balance problems.  CSMT practitioners and patients report positive results, especially for cervicogenic vertigo linked to neck and jaw dysfunction.

How Craniosacral Massage Therapy (CSMT) Can Help Vertigo

CSMT works to address potential physical and energetic imbalances that can cause vertigo, particularly those involving the craniosacral system (membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord).

  • Releases physical tension: CSMT targets tension in the fascia, a connective tissue network throughout the body, including the head, neck, and shoulders. Tension in these areas can affect the vestibular system, which controls balance, and can directly cause or worsen vertigo symptoms.
  • Encourages fluid movement: By using light touch, practitioners seek to release restrictions that can impede the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Improved fluid flow is thought to relieve pressure imbalances that contribute to vertigo. Additionally Julie at Posture Massage in Connecticut also offers lymphatic drainage and will incorporate those techniques in your CSMT massage.
  • Calms the nervous system: Vertigo episodes can be triggered or exacerbated by stress and anxiety. CSMT helps activate the body's rest-and-digest response, reducing stress hormones and calming the nervous system. This can lessen the frequency and intensity of vertigo attacks.
  • Addresses trauma: As a holistic therapy, CSMT also considers how physical and emotional trauma can contribute to conditions like vertigo. Some patients report feeling deep relaxation or processing emotions during and after sessions. Julie also work with emotional integration and will incorporate working through any emotions that arise in your CSMT for vertigo. Her wealth of skills and knowledge truly make her sessions highly sought after and valuable.

Craniosacral Massage Therapy for Tinnitus

Craniosacral massage therapy (CSMT) is a manual therapy that may help some tinnitus sufferers by promoting relaxation, calming the nervous system, and addressing potential issues like trauma, stress, or Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction.

How Craniosacral Therapy Can Help with Tinnitus

  • Nervous System Regulation: CSMT may help calm the nervous system and improve energetic flow throughout the body, which could make tinnitus less bothersome.
  • Trauma and Stress Reduction: CSMT sessions with Julie at Posture Massage in Connecticut can be a way to process trauma held within the body, which can be linked to tinnitus, leading to more relaxation and a calmer response to the ringing. She specializes in craniosacral massage combined with emotional integration to help readjust your body and brain holistically.
  • Jaw and Cranial Connection: Julie works on the jaw, cranium, and sacrum, and for somatic tinnitus (tinnitus not caused by an ear issue), manual work on the cranial bones and TMJ may improve alignment and reduce symptoms.
  • Mindful Approach: A CSMT massage with Julie can help you adopt a more detached, non-judgmental, and mindful approach to your tinnitus.

Special Considerations For Those With Tinnitus

  • Works Great on Somatic Tinnitus: CSMT is more likely to be beneficial for somatic tinnitus, which is linked to physical issues like head trauma or TMJ disorders, rather than tinnitus of otic (ear) origin.
  • Consult a Professional: If you have tinnitus, it's important to seek a medical diagnosis first to rule out underlying causes. Julie is happy to help when you have a diagnosis and after a doctor has determined what is causing your tinnitus. She is also happy to help if you feel like you have gotten no answers or relief by visiting a traditional medical doctor. It is not uncommon for people to schedule an appointment with Julie at Posture Massage as a "last resort" and finally finding relief to their symptoms!
  • Julie's Holistic Approach: CSMT may be more effective as part of a broader, multimodal treatment plan for tinnitus that includes stress management and lifestyle changes. It is important that you feel comfortable talking with Julie and answering her questions as she works on you during your session. Many times our aches and pains are tied to physical, emotional, stress related causes/traumas all of which can be addressed by one of the many therapeutic specialties that Julie has learned through the years.

What can I expect from a craniosacral therapy session?

A typical Craniosacral Therapy session takes place on a massage table in comfortable clothes. Some people can feel what is going on internally and others cannot, so do not worry if you are not one that can feel what's going on at first.  Relaxation, calmness, energy flow and sometimes other sensations occur as the rhythms come back and your head becomes balanced.  Depending on how much brain work gets done, you might feel like a zombie and not be able to think clearly for a small while after the session, so if that happens sleep as much as possible and try not to use electronics as your body is being rebooted.

What to Expect:

  • Session Length: A session typically lasts about an hour and is performed with the patient fully clothed.
  • Side Effects: Mild discomfort is the most common side effect, usually fading within 24 hours.
  • Adjustment Period: Some people may feel fatigued, relaxed, or a bit disoriented after a session as their body adjusts.
  • For Best Results: Remember to rest and hydrate following your session!
