Don’t forget your Vitamin F!


Many of us routinely take vitamin supplements to help our bodies to function optimally. One particular vitamin that I was introduced to has become the key to me feeling balanced and healthy. This vitamin helps to inject my life with meaning and purpose. What is this mysterious vitamin? Vitamin F as in vitamin fun:)


Vitamin Fun is a concept that can help you to remember that life is not just about responsibilities, reaching goals, or overcoming challenges, it is also about simply enjoying the moment and the present.


Think back to when you were a child and how having fun happened frequently, even if you were just doing something simple. We play as children to have fun. Even though playing teaches us valuable life lessons, it also teaches us the importance of experiencing joy regularly. I am especially susceptible to getting so wrapped up in work and the responsibilities of running my own business. This susceptibility often comes at the expense of being able to have moments of relaxation and fun. This has the side effect of zapping my energy and adding to the stresses of everyday life.


Once I started purposely and deliberately adding vitamin fun to my life, my outlook and daily enjoyment shifted dramatically. Stopping my brain/body and asking “What can I do right now that would make this situation more fun?” has made a huge impact on my daily life. 


Yes, fun can mean going on a long expensive vacation or retreat but it can also mean simply turning on some music and dancing while I clean my kitchen. Taking my dose of vitamin fun can be simply thinking of memories that made me laugh until I cried. It can be calling a friend and catching up by telling each other funny stories. You can work on hobbies or tackle fun home improvement tasks. Vitamin fun can also be serving others by doing something kind and unexpected for other people.

Some things that I find fun, may not be relaxing or enjoyable for others and that is okay. Many of you know that I truly enjoy canning vegetables, meats, fruits, and meals in glass jars using a pressure cooker. Not only do I enjoy cooking and canning, I enjoy the fun of experimenting with different recipes and the fun of saving money by wasting less foodstuffs. I also find it fun to eat things that I made with my own hands and mind. Would going to an Airbnb and canning a whole slew of foods for hours on end appeal to most people? Probably not, but for me it injects my life with some much needed creative, productive, and downright enjoyable time with myself.

Consciously adding more fun into your days can increase their quality and does not need to eat up a lot of time. You can add small fun activities or moments throughout your days and enhance your present moments with very little effort. Depression, anxiety, and fear are easy to absorb from our society and the news we read/watch. Countering that with more joy for life and fun times can remind our brains and bodies that living is a gift.

I recommend spending some time writing down activities, ideas, and things that you consider fun. Take it a step further and put each of those things onto a small piece of paper and put it into a container.
