Massage, Bodywork, and Brainwork Are For Men Too!

Massage, Bodywork, and Brainwork Are For Men Too!

Our society often categorizes spa treatments, massages, self-care, self healing, emotional work, and help with emotional healing as primarily something that women can benefit from. Men on the other hand are often raised to believe that when things get tough they just need to “buck up” or push through pains. “Being a man” in our society often means not being vulnerable and not seeking help when we need it. As you read this I hope you realize, well that is simply not true, all human beings need help and should be able to heal from trauma and stress.

Past Injuries

Sports, outdoor activities, and many leisure activities that men pursue can be hard on the body. It is easy to tear muscles or sprain joints when we are being active, no matter our gender. What we do to heal our bodies once injured is very important.

Many men that I work with have sustained some fairly serious injuries when they were reckless teenagers and young adults. There is something about bodies full of testosterone which causes the brains of those bodies to be willing to take some pretty serious risks while recreating, working, and playing. You can ask almost any guy out there about their serious injuries or near death experiences and they will most likely have a few from their youth. Unfortunately, many of those injuries were not treated well after occuring and there isn’t always a regimen of physical therapy prescribed. It is not uncommon for me to help people work through their injuries from the past and to help tissues injured ages ago to release and finally heal.

As men age some of those injuries raise their ugly heads and can cause pain and discomfort. Getting proper massage therapy, bodywork, and brainwork can help to relieve the issues in our tissues.

Keep in mind that when we injure a part of the body, other parts of the body often have to compensate and “make up for” the injured part. This compensation can continue long after the injury is healed. Bodywork sessions can help to unwind the compensation done because of an injury and can offer some relief from pain and tension.

You Are Allowed To Relax

It used to be that society was programmed to think that men were only allowed to relax in certain ways. They could sit in saunas or swim at the gym, but going to a spa might be considered a woman’s pleasure. Luckily this is not the case anymore. Other societies around the world have known for centuries that both genders can benefit from massage, spas, and releasing tension through relaxation.

We are all due for some relaxation of one kind or another. It is okay to not be constantly working and when we have time off, we can choose to help our bodies heal and relax.

Everyone Can Be Affected By Trauma

Traumas can happen to anyone and almost at any time. We all can experience the negative consequences of both physical and emotional trauma. Trauma can affect us physically, emotionally, mentally, or most commonly, in all ways. Processing traumatic events from our pasts and presents can help us to improve our overall health and can offer relief to our minds.

Many men carry burdens of trauma around with them. They often figure that it is just part of their existence now and that being a man means carrying heavy burdens. This is simply not true. Men deserve to let go, move forward, and heal as much as women and children do. Life can smack us around without our permission and as such we can seek comfort and healing without its permission.

One of the best ways to improve our relationships with others around us is to improve our relationship with ourselves. Healing can bring peace and recharge our wells of energy. Getting out of discomfort, whether physical or emotional, can infuse us with renewed life.

The Joys of Aging

Although a lot of wisdom can come with age, it can also be accompanied by experiencing more aches and pains. Men who have been used to being physical powerhouses their whole lives can eventually feel themselves aging. As normal as the aging process is, bodywork and massage can go a long way to help our bodies cope with the challenges of aging. Releasing tensions, stresses, and pains from our tissues and organs is important for maintaining their functions.

Another important adage is “use it or lose it.” It is said that humans lose mobility and physicality due to a lack of muscle mass as we age. The best way to reduce muscle loss and maintain mobility is to do strength training. A natural part of strength training is feeling sore and some pain. Having regular massage therapy sessions can go a long way in helping us to heal from our workouts, which incidentally helps us to keep going to the gym or participating in sports and exercise.
